LSU vs. Alabama Football History: Series Record, Rivalry & Biggest Games

Few LSU matchups have carried more national weight in the modern era than Alabama. The series combines long SEC history with championship races, iconic coaches, NFL talent and multiple games that changed the national title picture.

LSU vs. Alabama all-time series record

Alabama led the series 57-27-5 through 2024. The Crimson Tide beat LSU 20-9 in Tuscaloosa in 2025, moving the series to 58-27-5 in Alabama’s favor entering 2026.

Why LSU-Alabama became a national rivalry

The rivalry intensified dramatically in the 2000s and 2010s as both programs became regular national championship contenders. Nick Saban’s move from LSU to Alabama added another layer, and the annual game often functioned as a playoff elimination game before the College Football Playoff even existed.

Defining games

  • LSU’s 9-6 overtime win in 2011 matched No. 1 LSU against No. 2 Alabama in the “Game of the Century.”

  • Alabama won the rematch 21-0 in the BCS National Championship Game later that season.

  • LSU’s 46-41 victory in Tuscaloosa in 2019 became a signature moment on the way to a 15-0 national championship.

  • LSU’s 32-31 overtime win in 2022 produced one of Tiger Stadium’s loudest finishes of the decade.

The rivalry after Saban

The coaching names have changed, but the matchup remains a benchmark for LSU. In the Lane Kiffin era, Alabama remains one of the programs LSU must consistently beat to compete for SEC championships and playoff positioning.
