OXFORD, Miss. — LSU spent most of Saturday night chasing a game that looked gone by halftime. The Tigers finally caught Ole Miss at 24-24 in the fourth quarter, only to watch Trinidad Chambliss answer with the drive that decided the Magnolia Bowl.

The comeback was real

The second half looked like a different game. Jakeem Jackson intercepted Chambliss, and LSU converted the short field into a 4-yard Sam Leavitt touchdown run. Later in the third quarter, Leavitt found Weston Watkins for a 26-yard touchdown that cut the deficit to 24-21.

A Scott Starzyk field goal tied the game at 24 with 11:21 remaining. From down 17 points, LSU had ripped off 17 straight and had the stadium feeling a very different kind of pressure.

Why Ole Miss won the final six minutes

Chambliss took the game back. Ole Miss answered the tie with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that drained more than five minutes. His 14-yard touchdown keeper put the Rebels ahead 30-24, and the two-point conversion made it an eight-point game.

LSU still had a final chance. The Tigers reached the Ole Miss 6-yard line, but a fourth-and-goal pass from Leavitt was tipped and intercepted by Jaylon Braxton. That ended the comeback with less than a minute left.

What the loss means

This is not a season-ending loss, but it changes the margin for error. LSU is now 0-1 in conference play and returns home for another major SEC game against Texas A&M. The Aggies are also 2-1 and 0-1 after losing 31-21 at home to Kentucky.
