47.5 Yards Per Game: LSU’s Run Defense Faces Its Cleanest Test Yet

3 min read

The most absurd number on LSU's stat sheet is not 35 points against Texas A&M or 502 yards of offense per game. It is 47.5.

Quick Answer

LSU has allowed only 190 rushing yards through four games, an average of 47.5 per contest and 1.7 yards per carry. McNeese enters Tiger Stadium averaging 189.4 rushing yards per game and 5.8 yards per attempt. Saturday puts the strongest part of McNeese's offense directly against the most dominant part of LSU's defense.

LSU has erased normal rushing production

Opponents have carried the ball 115 times against LSU and gained only 190 net yards. The Tigers have also produced 33 tackles for loss and 19 sacks, so negative plays are doing more than ending drives; they are crushing rushing averages before offenses can establish rhythm.

That front has been led by Princewill Umanmielen and Deuce Geralds, but the run-defense number is too extreme to belong to two players. Linebackers, safeties and edge defenders have consistently closed cutback lanes before runs can become explosive.

TigerHype's breakdown of the 197-yard defensive performance against Texas A&M showed the same pattern: LSU kept the Aggies behind schedule and never let the run game create easier throws.

McNeese is not coming to Baton Rouge to abandon the run

McNeese has rushed for 947 yards in five games. Omiri Wiggins owns 375 of those yards at 6.7 per carry, but he is not the only productive runner. Devin Lippold, Marquez Davis, Hutch Swilley and Tre'Vonte Citizen have all contributed to a ground game that averages nearly 190 yards per week.

In its 27-24 win over East Texas A&M, McNeese ran for 210 yards. The official McNeese recap confirms that the Cowboys are willing to lean on the ground game when the game is tight.

Why this is more useful than a mismatch sounds

LSU is heavily expected to control the game, but run defense is one of the few areas where McNeese can force the Tigers to play real football early. If LSU fits gaps lazily or rotates backups without clear communication, Wiggins has enough burst to punish it.

That makes the first half useful. LSU can test Davhon Keys, Tylen Singleton and the reshaped second level against an opponent that actually wants to run rather than simply throwing underneath and waiting for the clock to expire.

TigerHype has already detailed why Wiggins is the individual runner LSU must respect. The larger question is whether McNeese's entire rushing structure can create anything LSU's first four opponents could not.

The standard should not change with the opponent

A dominant run defense can lose its edge in games that look easy on paper. The first bad habit is usually hesitation: linebackers read slower, safeties trigger later and defensive linemen chase plays instead of controlling gaps.

LSU cannot afford that. With Whit Weeks sidelined, the Tigers are already asking new players to own more communication and more snaps. The best way to build trust in that rotation is to keep the standard identical.

What a win inside the win looks like

If LSU holds McNeese near or below 100 rushing yards, limits explosive runs and gets meaningful snaps for Keys and Singleton, the Tigers will have accomplished more than padding a season average.

They will have shown that the identity of the defense belongs to the structure, not just the original starting lineup.

The bottom line

McNeese's 189.4 rushing yards per game are real production. LSU's 47.5 allowed are even louder. Saturday is the cleanest possible collision between those two numbers.

For LSU, the challenge is simple: make an offense that averages nearly 190 on the ground look like every other rushing attack it has faced so far.
