LSU College Football Playoff Tracker 2026: 12-Team Format, Dates & Path
The College Football Playoff remains a 12-team field for the 2026-27 season. This TigerHype tracker is built to follow LSU’s postseason path as the regular season, SEC race and CFP rankings develop.
How the 2026-27 CFP field is selected
The CFP says the field includes the champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC; the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt; and the next seven highest-ranked teams. Notre Dame is included if it finishes in the top 12 of the final CFP rankings.
12-team bracket structure
Four first-round games are played on the campuses of the higher-seeded teams. The winners advance to four quarterfinal bowl games, then two semifinal bowls, and finally the national championship.
2026-27 CFP dates
First round: Friday, Dec. 18, 2026 — one game.
First round: Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026 — three games.
Quarterfinals: Dec. 30, 2026 and Jan. 1, 2027 — Fiesta, Cotton, Peach and Rose.
Semifinals: Jan. 14, 2027 Orange Bowl and Jan. 15, 2027 Sugar Bowl.
National Championship: Monday, Jan. 25, 2027 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
What changes in 2026
Beginning with this playoff, historical conference bowl tie-ins are removed from the bowl-assignment process. The top three seeds select their preferred quarterfinal bowl path in ranking order, and the No. 4 seed is assigned the remaining quarterfinal bowl.
What matters most for LSU
Win the SEC whenever possible — the SEC champion has an automatic place in the field.
Protect overall ranking position because at-large access depends on the final CFP rankings.
Road wins and games against ranked opponents can become major résumé separators.
Late-season losses can reshape seeding even if LSU remains in the field.
